Emergency Information

The problem is with any animal, you just never know when they may get sick or get into difficulties that mean they need veterinary care.  Try as you might it is something that will happen when least expected so it is good to at least know what you can do when that emergency happens.  You will be pleased to know that, for emergencies, we provide access to veterinary care 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
All veterinary practices are obliged by the Royal College of Veterinary surgeons to make provision to arrange access to veterinary treatments 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Some practices provide this by arranging cover by using an out of hour’s clinic, but at Pelyn Veterinary Group we offer an out of hour’s service to all our clients manned by our own veterinary surgeons.  This gives any of our vets seeing an animal out of hours in our practice the ability to access all the past history whichever of our surgeries you usually go to.  We want to provide the best continuity of care that we can for all our patients.

The emergency cover starts as soon as our normal surgery hours end.  At the weekends the emergency cover starts from 12 noon on the Saturday and goes right through the weekend.  We do run an emergency surgery on a Sunday morning at Lostwithiel so if you are worried about your pet, if you ring in about 9.30 am we can arrange to see you saving you a call out fee.  We do charge a fee for seeing you out of hours extra to your normal consultation and this does increase between 10pm and 8 am.

As most cases that we see out of hours require nursing help, and quite often hospitalisation for treatment, we run our out of hour’s consultations at our Lostwithiel branch.  We have nurses on site at this surgery 24 hours a day.  This means if we do have to keep your pet in overnight there is someone there all the time to care for them.  It also means we can easily run blood checks, set up drips, give an anaesthetic, take an x-ray etc. – in fact all that we usually do during normal surgery hours.  For the best attention we would always encourage you to bring your pet into the surgery rather than having a house call – we are limited to what we can do for your pet at home.

The duty vet is part of our day time staff and will working from home. They will always be ready to come out to the surgery when a pet needs care.  Although we never mind seeing any animal during the night please does keep this for emergencies only.  If you need any help during out of hours then please ring the normal surgery number and you will be given directions as to how to contact us.  If the vet is busy and unable to take the call directly, you will be asked to leave a message which will be passed onto the vet straight away and they will get back to you as soon as possible.  If ever the surgery phone continually rings or there appears to be any other fault then do ring the other branch as the emergency number will be the same for both surgeries. If this has been necessary please could you bring it the attention of the practice manager or duty vet so that any faults can be dealt with.
